Private educational guide

Might you need an ITIN?

Use this short guide to orient yourself on Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers. Then find an independent Acceptance Agent or CAA through Quick ITIN Connect.

What an ITIN is

An ITIN is a nine-digit number the IRS issues to people who need a U.S. tax identification number but are not eligible for a Social Security Number. It does not authorize work and it does not change immigration status.

Who often needs one

People without an SSN who must file a federal return, claim a treaty benefit or report certain income. Dependents and spouses on a U.S. return may also need one when the IRS requires it.

Common documents

Most applications use Form W-7, proof of identity and foreign status (often a passport) and the tax return or exception documentation. A CAA can certify many documents.

Step 1

Do you have a U.S. Social Security Number (SSN) - or are you eligible to get one?

ITINs are only for people who are not eligible for an SSN.

This is a private guided self-check for education only. It is not a professional eligibility determination. Only the IRS assigns ITINs. Independent Acceptance Agents and Certifying Acceptance Agents make their own professional assessments.

Ready to talk with a provider

Quick ITIN Connect introduces prospective clients to independent providers. Providers are not Quick ITIN Connect employees. Only the IRS assigns ITINs.

Frequently asked questions

Who decides whether I can get an ITIN?

Only the IRS. This page is an educational guide. Quick ITIN Connect does not determine eligibility or prepare Form W-7. An independent Acceptance Agent or CAA reviews your situation.

Is anything from my answers saved or sent?

No. The checker is private and runs on your device. We do not ask for an SSN, ITIN or tax facts in this guide.

What is a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA)?

A CAA may authenticate certain identity documents under a current IRS agreement, so you often do not need to mail your original passport.

What should I do after this guide?
